Anna L. Burkhart Ryder was the first woman M.D. in Franklin County and the first woman to be elected President of the Medical Society of Franklin County.
Born in 1863, she was one of seven daughters of german immigrant Christian Burkhart, a flour mill and bakery owner. She got her undergrad in 1893 and began to practice medicine in 1899. She owned and drove one of the first cars in Chambersburg.

Her doctor’s bag is on display at the Franklin County Historical Society in Chambersburg.
