Jesse was the sixth of seven children born to John Hogan and Jane (McFarland) Bean (Note: Some of the siblings changed their names during this generation to Beene or Been). He married Matilda Stephenson in 1842 and they had seven children: Martha Elizabeth, Sarah Jane, Priscilla A., Rufus Morgan, France Allene, William F. and Estelle.
