GROVE, Okla. - Leonard H. Herndon, 81, of Grove, Okla., a former Parsons resident, died at 4 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 1, 2005, at Grove General Hospital. He had been in failing health. He was born Oct. 1, 1923, at McCune to William G. and Ola Ethel (Stotts) Herndon. The family moved to Parsons when he was an infant and he grew up in Parsons and attended schools here. Before World War II he worked for the Katy Railroad. He worked there again briefly after the war. From 1943 to 1952, he worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. He was a Parsons policeman from 1952 to 1972 and retired as assistant police chief. After retiring, he farmed and raised cattle. In 1982 he moved to Grove. His first marriage was to Geraldine Pruitt. Later they divorced. On June 19, 1972, he married LaDonna Drumm. She preceded him in death on May 19, 1990. He and Ruth (O'Neill) Robinson were married June 23, 1998, at Denver. She survives of the home. He was a member of First Christian Church of Grove, Parsons Lodge No. 117, A.F. & A.M., Brown-Bishop Post No. 704, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Disabled American Veterans. He enjoyed spending time with his family. Other survivors include two sons, Rick Herndon of Louisville, Ky., and Ron Herndon of Parsons; three daughters, Judy Adams of Lawrence, Roxie Namey of Topeka and Gail Trow of Salina; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Oscar Herndon, Carl Herndon and Doyle Herndon. The service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Parsons with Wayne Shaw and the Rev. Alvin L. Daetwiler officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, with burial honors given by the Parsons Police Department. Masonic rites will be given by the Parsons Lodge No. 117, A.F. & A.M. Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday and Monday. Memorials are suggested to the American Lung Association.
