Mary Patricia Hanford died of whooping cough at the age of 4 months. It was thought that she was exposed to the disease by neighborhood children that were visiting her older siblings at the time. She was originally buried in Grand Island Cemetery in Grand Island Nebraska. In 1929, her family moved west to Oregon. They had her reburied in her grandparents' (Patterson) family plot in Walnut Hill Cemetery in Council Bluffs Iowa.
