Mr. Moses Gould, the well-known real estate dealer, died suddenly at the residence of his son at No. 81 Federal street, yesterday morning. Mr. Gould had been out to walk but returned to the house and asked for some medicine, saying he did not feel well. He reclined on the sofa and passed away from an attack of heart disease.

Moses Gould was born in this city October 26, 1815, and was therefore in his 78th year. He was apprenticed to Mr. S. H. Colesworthy when a lad to learn the bookbinder's trade and served his apprenticeship. He then remained a year with Mr. Colesworthy, after which he went into partnership with his brother-in-law Mr. Woodman, in the brass foundry and stove business on Exchange street. He remained in this business a number of years, but his health failed him. He always claimed the atmosphere of the brass foundry undermined his health. He then engaged in the real estate business, but for the past 20 years his health has seriously interfered with active business.

Mr. Gould was thoroughly impressed with the idea of the growth and prosperity of Portland. He was a devoted follower of the late John A. Poor, and when Mr. Poor advocated the Portland & Rutland Railroad as opposed to the Portland & Ogdensburg scheme Mr. Gould heartily supported him and was made a member of the Rutland directory. But the Rutland scheme fell through while the Ogdensburg road was constructed.

Mr. Gould made large investments in real estate in the eastern part of the city expecting in the end to realize a large fortune from them, but failed to see his hopes materialize.

He leaves a widow and family, one of the sons with whom Mr. Gould resided, being connected with the Portland Company.

Mr. Gould was a member of the Aged Brotherhood, also of the Mechanics' Association, which he joined March 19, 1841, and of Maine Lodge of Old Fellows, with which he united November 6, 1863, or 50 years ago.
