Funeral services for Tony Don Sullivan, 88, of Branson, will be at 10 a.m., Friday, Feb. 17 at the Snapp-Bearden Funeral Home in Branson. Burial will be in Lutie Cemetery with military rites provided by the Korean War Veterans Association, Harry S. Truman, Chapter # 5, Visitation is from 2-5 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 16 in the Snapp-Bearden Funeral Home.
Mr. Sullivan died Sunday, Feb. 12, 2006, at Skaggs Community Health Care Center in Branson. He was born July 5, 1917, in Gainesville, the son of Albert and Lenna (Fulton) Sullivan. He married Leora Wilma Morey in 1947, in Kansas City. After her death in 1990, he married Bonnie McDowell in 1995.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Force, having served during World War II, serving in England.
He was a professional entertainer and radio personality and worked for a time on an English speaking radio station in France just prior to World War II. He worked primarily on WHB and KMBZ radio station in Kansas City from the 1940s to the 1970s, Before moving to Kansas City, he worked at KWTO Radio in Springfield and WHN Radio in New York City.
Mr.Sullivan began his musical career at 16, playing music for a square dance at the old Fred Flax place. After leaving Gainesville, he traveled to New York City and played country and western music for a radio station. He went to Hollywood in the 1930s where he was in the Red Skelton film "Lady Be Good." He was also in movies with Hopalong Cassidy, Tim McCoy, William Holden, Tex Ritter and others.
He wrote many songs including "Whipporwill Time in the Ozarks" and Give "Thanks."
He served as master of ceremonies for Hootin and Hollarin for many years.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Leora, in 1990; his parents; and five sisters.
