He was preceded in death by his wife, Dessie Glasgow Kitchen, on Dec. 12, 1967, and by a daughter, Willodean Williams in 1985. He was married in 1981 to Lillian Willard Kitchen, who survives. Other survivors include one son, Clyde Kitchen of Arkadelphia; one brother, Roy Kitchen of Ceres, Calif.; three sisters, Effie Linam of Rector, Pearl Braman of Stockton, Calif., and Ruth Vonbusch of Modesto, Calif.; eight grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren.

Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Monday, July 20, at the Church of Christ at Fifth and Pine with Bro. Jim McKeel and Bro. C. Ray Miller officiating. Interment was in Woodland Heights Cemetery under the direction of Irby Funeral Service of Rector.

William was usually called Shafter and lived around Rector, AR for most of his life. He married Dessie Glasgow and had 2 children and many grandchildren. He served in World War I, drafting in to the Army at the age of 17 in 1915. The later part of his life he farmed in Rector, AR. Dessie died in December 1967 from a heart attack. He was alone for a year and then he met and married Mary Jewell in 1968. He and his wife Mary made a trip to Stockton, CA in 1977. A newspaper write up was done on them:

"Mr. and Mrs. Shafter Kitchen have just returened from a 12 day trip to California. While there, they visited relatives and friends in Ceres, Modesto, Stockton, Waterford and Hickman. A Kitchen get together was held in Modesto on July 23, 1977 where 72 people attended. Six of the Kitchen's were Mrs. Ruth Vonbusch & family, Mrs. Dimple Rhynes & family, Mrs. Pearl Braman & family, Mrs. Isa Jenkins & family, Mr. Roy Kitchens & family, and Mr. Shafter Kitchen and his wife. Mrs. Effie Linam from Rector, AR was the only remaining Kitchen sibling not able to attend."

Shafter and Mary's marriage didn't last many years, they divorced and he later met Lillian Willard and they married in February 1981. He contracted cancer of the lip and fought it for years but after Lillian had been by his side, he passed away July of 1987.
