Catherine was born on May 13, 1834, the daughter of Amasa and Rhobia (nee White) Austin.

Catherine married Nelson Cummings on July 30, 1849. It is unknown what happened to Nelson. On January 1, 1853 she married Jacob Van Deventer in St. Charles, Kane County, Illinois.

Catherine and Jacob had six children; Harriett (Hattie), Hannah Amelia, William, Amasa Romonzo, Amy Clara and Malvin William.

In the 1860 census Catherine is living in Malta, DeKalb County, Illinois with her brother William Austin.

Catherine died before 1870 in the DeKalk/Ogle/Kane County area.
