He studied medicine in Washington, D.C. and first set up a practice in Hagerstown, Maryland in the former offices of Dr. Charles McGill at 29 South Potomac Street. He later traveled with his sister Emma J (Blake) Putman and now brother-in law Dr.W. D. Putman with whom it would seem he had studied medicine in Washington, D.C., to Ohio.
