SAMANTHA MCCREARY, was born 7 October 1819, Chester Township, Knox County, Ohio and died 29 September 1909, Belmont Township, Speed, Phillips County, Kansas and is buried in Belmont Cemetery.
She married (1) Lewis George, 15 January 1840, Knox County, Ohio. The Babb Cemetery record in Monroe County, Iowa, shows Lewis George, 1819 - May 5, 1859, husband of Samantha.
Samantha married (2) Cyrus Lyman Sanford, 15 January 1865, Albia, Guilford Township, Monroe County, Iowa at the residence of Samantha George. Cyrus Lyman Sanford was born 27 August 1827 in Massachusetts and died 4 January 1916, St. Joseph, Buchanan County, Missouri and is buried in Belmont Cemetery, Phillips County, Kansas with his wife. He was living with his stepdaughter Iretta George Hoopes when he died. He died of arteriosclerosis in St. Joseph, Buchanan County, Missouri and was 88 years, 4 months, and 27 days old, and a retired farmer.

1840 Lewis George and Samantha were living in Harmony, Delaware County, Ohio and listed as 1 white male age 20-29; and one white female age 20-29.

1850 They were in Chester Township, Morrow County, Ohio and listed as Lewis George, 31, farmer, $1250 real estate, Ohio; Samantha, 30; Jennet, 8; Allen, 7; Mary, 5; Minerva, 3; and Elizabeth, age 2 months born Ohio.

1852 Monroe County, Iowa, James McCreary grantee bought 40 acres land from Lewis George and wife Samantha on 9 August 1852, in the NW quarter Section 22, Township 72, Range 18, for $100 but the deed wasn't filed until 31 May 1855.

1855 Monroe County, Iowa, James McCreary & Margaret McCreary his wife, grantor (sold) to Lewis George grantee, on 7 February 1855, part NW of the SE quarter Section 22, Township 72, Range 18, 26 acres for $250 in Monroe County, Iowa. Lewis and Samantha George sold the 26 acres to Isaac Laremore [sic] on 17 February 1855. Bureau of Land Management records show Lewis George purchased 120 acres in Monroe County on 10 March 1855 at Township 72N, Range 18W, Section 22, N½SW¼. The same day he also purchased 80 acres at Township 72N, Range 18W, Section 27, N½NW¼.

Know all men by these presents that we Lewis George and Samantha George his wife of the County of Monroe State of Iowa for the consideration of one dollar do hereby convey to James McCray [sic] of the County of Monroe State of Iowa the following tract of land situated in Monroe County State of Iowa described as follows to wit lying and being in the Town of George Town commencing at the south east corner of Lot four in block two thence west with the survey six rods thence North four rods thence east six rods thence south four rods to the place of beginning and warrant the title against all persons whomsoever in witness whereof we have hereunto subscribed our names this 2nd day of March AD 1855.

Bureau of Land Management records for Monroe County, Iowa show Lewis George bought on 1 May 1855 5th Meridian, Township 72N, 18 Range, Section 23, W SE¼NE¼, 40 acres. Also on the same date he purchased 40 acres at Township 72, 18 Range, Section 27, SE¼NE¼.

1856 They were in Guilford, Monroe County, Iowa and listed in the Iowa state census as Lewis George, 37, married, farmer, native voter, and militia; Samantha, 36, married; Jennett, 14; Allen K., 13; Mary, 11; Manerva, 9; Elizabeth, 6; and Wm. H., 2, born Iowa.

1859 Lewis George died 5 May and was buried in Babb Cemetery, Monroe County, Iowa.

1860 They were living next to Samantha's parents in Guilford Township, Monroe County and listed as Surmantha [sic] George, 40, female, $2400 real estate, $600 personal property, born Ohio; Jennett, 18, female, common school teacher, Ohio; Allen R., 17, farming, Ohio; Mary, 15, domestic work, in school, Ohio; Minerva, 13, in school, Ohio; Elizabeth, 10, Ohio; William H., 6, Iowa; Lewis F., 4, Iowa; Iretta, 11 months, Iowa.

1865 Civil War records show Cyrus L. Sanford was a Private with the 11 Regiment, Kansas Cavalry. This may conflict with a record of Civil War Veterans in Phillips County, Kansas which shows Cyrus Sanford of Big Bend, served in Co. A., 83rd Illinois Infantry.

1870 Can't find in the census.

1880 They were living in Belmont, Phillips County, Kansas and listed as C. L. Sanford, 52, farmer, born Massacheuchetts; and Samantha, 61, wife, keep house, born Ohio.

1885 The Kansas state census shows them in Belmont, Phillips County and listed as C. L. Sanford, 55, white male, married, farmer; and Samantha, 66, married.
1890 Phillipsburg, Kansas, Cyrus Sanford transferred to Samantha Sanford, NW quarter of Range 26, Township 4, Section 19, for $500 with a warranty deed.

1900 In 1900 they were still in Belmont, Phillips County and listed as C. L. Sanford, 72, born August 1928?, Massachusetts, age 34 at first marriage, farmer; and Samantha, 81, born May 1819, age 34 at first marriage, 8 children and 6 living, born Ohio.

1905 In the Kansas state census they are in Phillips County and listed as C. Sanford, 77, farmer, from Iowa before Kansas; and Samantha, born Ohio and from Iowa before Kansas.

1909 Samantha died and her cemetery stone is marked Samantha Sanford, b. Oct 7, 1819 and d. Sept 31 [sic] 1909.

1910 After Samantha's death, Cyrus Sanford was living in Phillips County at age 82 with his stepson William H. George's family.

1916 Cyrus died and his cemetery stone is marked Cyrus L. Sanford, b. Aug 27, 1827 and d. Jan 4. 1916.
