Mrs. Mercer, whose maiden name was Knox, was born April 20, 1820, in Champaign county, Ohio, and came to Illinois with her parents about 1833, and settled at Knox's Grove in Lee county, where Dr. Mercer wooed and won her heart. They were married Oct. 15, 1840, at Knox's Grove, In Lee county.
Six children were born to Dr. and Mrs. Mercer, of whom three are living; Joseph, of Peoria, Mrs. Jane Beede, of Mendota, and Mrs. Rachel Hamlin, of Princeton.
