Franklin's earliest hostelry was built about 1803 by Benjamin White. Located in a broad meadow back of the present jail, the tavern was convenient to the Town Spring that furnished water to that section where the first settlers located. The old inn was frequently visited by men prominent in early TN history. Andrew Jackson, Thomas Benton and Felix Grundy were but a few. Mr. White afforded many conveniences to his guest gunsmith and blacksmith shops , a repair yard for wagons . The building was torn down in 1904.
