Irene Annis passes away in Jackson

Lois Irene Annis passed away on March 18, and was buried in Jackson on March 22. Much of her lifetime had been spent in this valley.

Lois Irene Annis was born in Victor, Idaho on July 20, 1891, the eldest daughter of Lois Ann and John L. Eynon. Irene's early schooling was in Victor. Her mother passed away when Irene was twelve years old. With the help of her Aunt Leona Parsons, she did her best to be a mother to her younger brothers and sisters. Her father married Mary Turner who was a loving step-mother to the children.

The Eynon family moved to Rexburg where Irene attended the Ricks Academy and graduated with the first class of the school.

In 1905 the Eynons moved to Jackson Hole. Everyone in the family had to help to make ends meet and Irene did her share in caring for the children, cooking at her parent's hotel, and helping care for the sick.

In 1914 Irene married Elmer Hodges. To this union six children were born. Hard times made it necessary for Irene to work away from the home. She still found time to work in the church and her church work was always a source of great satisfaction in her life. She has mentioned to us many times that some of her happiest moments were when she had her children blessed and baptized.

Elmer passed away in October 1931 following a long bout with cancer. Irene married Mel Annis on January 12, 1934. Mel was just the partner she needed to help care for her smaller children. Mel and Irene started their married life at Wilson. Mel was a talented electrician. Mr. Benson recognized Mel's ability and hired them to run the light plant on Flat Creek. At that time Benson's light plant was Jackson's only source of electricity. This was a 24 hour job and Irene did all she could to help Mel with the work.

After 12 years at the light plant Mel and Irene worked for Clifford Hansen at the home ranch in Spring Gulch and at the Bar Double R Ranch up the Gros Ventre. They spent 14 years with Hansens and then, because of Irene's failing health, they moved to Jackson. They spent some time in Portland, Oregon and made a couple of visits to Mel's childhood home in Canada. The last few years have been spent at their home in east Jackson.

Irene has always attended church and spent as much time as her health permitted doing Relief Society and Sunday school work.

Anyone who knew Irene had only good words to say about her. She never gossiped and saw only the good in people. She often said that her early hard life and religious training gave her the courage to always face life with a smile.

A little of Irene's philosophy toward life shows in her last contribution to our family letter written on March 13. She said she was counting her blessings instead of her pains and taking less medicine and doing more praying.

Surviving are Irene's husband, Mel Annis; one daughter - Lois Wagoner, Portland, Oregon; sons, Jack and Charles Hodges, Jackson and Bill Hodges, Rock Springs. She has 13 living grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and 2 great, great grandchildren. Also surviving are sisters: Edith Evans, Laverna Barnes, Leona Ostler, Gertrude Bircher, Maxine Hiatt and Joella Taylor - and two brothers - Curt and Horace Eynon.

Irene was preceded in death by two daughters. Pearl passed away in 1957 and Veora passed away just a month ago. Also, two brothers - Lester and Joe preceded her.
