Fran Burnell, 93 of Grinnell died Friday, Oct 3, at St. Francis Manor.
Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at the Smith Funeral Home. Burial was in Hazelwood Cemetery.
The son of Richman and Lenora Goforth Burnell, he was born on March 29, 1893 on the family farm near Bristow. At the age of 17 he moved with his family to Cedar Falls where he attended high school. He was a graduate of the College of Comemrce in Waterloo and the Palmer Chiropratic College in Davenport. Durning World War I he served in the Signal Corps and later transferred to the Air Corps. Following his discharge he returned to Iowa as a radio mechanic. He was married to Sarah Graham on Aug 29, 1919 at Brooklyn. He subsequently accepted a position as an air traffic controller and weather specialist for 36 years. He had been station at the Des Moines and Ottumwa airports in 1963.
Mr Burnell is survived by one son. Merle of rural Grinnell; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one brother. He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one sister, Florence Palmer; and one brother Ray Burnell.
