Civil War Union Army Officer. He was commissioned as a 1st Lieutenant in Company A, 1st Connecticut Volunteer Heavy Artillery on May 22, 1861, and served until he was discharged on October 29, 1861. On that day he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 2nd United States Regular Infantry. Promoted to 1st Lieutenant on September 12, 1863, he was honorably discharged on November 16, 1863 for disability. On March 12, 1865 he was brevetted Captain, US Regular Army for "gallant and meritorious services during the Battle of Hanover Court House, Va."

husband of Alice Maude Clark m. July 16, 1862 in Saint John's Lutheran Church, Hagerstown, Maryland. They had one child live to adulthood Clyde Fitch, the famous playwright. It is believed that he was a son of Horatio Fitch and a grandson of Esther (Hyde) and Benjamine Bissell Fitch. He was a Union officer from Connecticut in the Civil War, Connecticut Heavy Artillery
