Sam was the son of Adam J. Chessor and Lucy Ann Bates, and the husband of Adell Thornton.

Sam and Adell were the parents of John Everett, Lillie, Emmett Adam, Delbert Brown, and Edith Pauline Chessor.

Sam taught school on Upper Sinking and on Russell's Creek, but he gave up teaching for farming. His brother Jim often bragged about his farming ability.

Sam passed away from lead poisoning after absorbing lead while painting.
