OBITUARY

VERA L. CLANIN

Vera L. Clanin, 106, passed away at Chariton Nursing and Rehab Center on September 3, 2013. She was born October 9, 1906 southeast of Russell, Iowa to A. C. and Ada Dixon. She was the youngest of four children.

Vera attended Victory School, a one-room schoolhouse in Cedar Township from kindergarten through eighth grade. She then attended and graduated from Russell High School in 1924. After graduation, Vera taught school at one-room schoolhouses in Cedar and Washington Townships.

On December 17, 1930, Vera was married to Wade Clanin. Vera and Wade ran a service station on the Russell corner for 15 years. In 1951, they purchased a farm outside of Russell and farmed until Wade retired in 1979. They then moved to Vera's old home on Smith St. in Russell that her father had built in 1925, and Vera lived there until she moved to Chariton Nursing and Rehab Center in 2001.

Vera loved to read (especially her Bible), cook, can and to walk. She was known for her upbeat personality and positive attitude.

She was a former member of the Center Community Church where she taught Sunday School and was the Sunday School Superintendent for seven years.

Vera was preceded in death by her parents, Wade, her husband of 56 years, her siblings, Howard Dixon, Hazel Bennett, and Allen Dixon, and her niece, Leanna Wardlow.

Vera is survived by her nieces and nephews: Howard Dixon, Jr. of Bettendorf; Margaret Ann (Bob) Hill of Indianapolis, IN; Clarice (Paul) Smith of Promise City; Emma Lee (Max) Warrick of Davenport; and her sister-in-law, Hazel Clanin of Russell.
