Joseph N. Amato, age 100, former resident of Shelby died Monday, September 2, 2013 in Bellevue Care Center.

Born September 18, 1912 in Crestline to Sam and Rose (Ricco) Amato he had been a Shelby area resident the majority of his life. A veteran of the United States Navy, he served during WWII. He was formerly employed with the Shelby Ice and Fuel Co. working as a beer distribution driver. After World War II, he purchased property on Mansfield Ave. where he owned and operated Amato's Superett for many years before moving his store to the north side of Shelby, operating as Amato's Foodland. Following his career as a grocer he was employed as a security guard with the Shelby Mutual Insurance Co. retiring when he was 71 years old.

He was a member of the American Legion and the Owls Club in Shelby. Joe loved watching sports and enjoyed fishing and hunting.

He is survived by his children, Eddie Amato of Maning, South Carolina, Sherry Amato of Cornville, Arizona, Georgia Amato of Attica, Nichole Liston of Marion and Vince and Larry Amato both of Shelby; five grandchildren, Alicia Diaz, Jeremy and Lindsey Bird, Tyler Liston and Brianna Liston; four great grandchildren, Landen Nobles, Gavin Amato, Hannah Bird, and Hunter Pine, former spouse, Sharon Amato, and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Ada; son, Joey Amato; two granddaughters, Kelly Amato and Lisa Amato and four brothers, Loyd, Sam, Jim and Tom Amato; four sisters, Carrie Felix, Mary Lynn Woessner, Rose Lux and Theresa Felty.

A Mass of Christian burial will held 10:30 AM Friday September 6, 2013 at the Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Shelby. Father James Sanford will officiate with interment in Most Pure Heart of Mary Cemetery. Friends may call at the Barkdull Funeral Home Thursday from 5:00 to 8:00 PM.
