Martha Rivers Adams was born in lynchburg, Virginia, daughter of William Duval Adans and Martha Rivers Adams. She graduated from Randolph Macon Women's College, and was a former member of the Junior League of Lynchburg, member of the Dogwood Garden Club, and St. Paul's Episcopal Church. She was always interested in civic and cultural activities and was a member of the Fine Arts Center, the Preservation of VA Antiquities, the Lynchburg Historical Society, and the Roanoke Branch of the English Speaking Union.
