Jefferson Perry Chaffin was the son of Robert Murray Chaffin (1797 – 1862) and Caroline Sarah Layton (1810 – 1838). His mother, Caroline Sarah Layton passed away at the age of 28 and left seven children. She is believed to be buried at Alsup near the mouth of the James River. After his mother's death his father married Sarah Louisa Clifton and they had six more children.
