Laurens was the son of Jonathan Stearns (28 June 1781 - 7 Apr 1863) and Sarah (Tufts) Stearns (died 4 May 1860).

Laurens [1st] married Lydia (Foster) Stearns (1820 - 9 May 1862) on 28 Dec 1843.

In the 1855 New York State Census, Laurens and Lydia were living in Gorham, Ontario County, New York.

In the 1860 U.S. Census, Laurens and Lydia were living in Ypsilanti, Washtenaw County, Michigan.

Lydia died in Ypsilanti.

Laurens [2nd] married Margaret P. (Barlow) Stearns Wilson (22 Apr 1837 - 12 Mar 1915) on 28 Nov 1868 as her first husband.

In the 1870 U.S. Census, Laurens and Margaret were living in Hedgesville, Berkeley County, West Virginia, and he was a "farmer."

Laurens wrote his will on 3 June 1881 and it was probated on 2 Apr 1886. He mentions his wife, Margaret, and his son, Edward. He also mentions Bert L. Wigle, who he intended to adopt, and if possible, change his name to Bert L. Stearns.

The known child of Laurens and Lydia was Edward Foster Stearns (7 Feb 1851 - 11 Dec 1925). He was born in Gorham, Ontario County, New York. Edward married Carolina E. (Knoch) Stearns ["Carrie"] (born c.1861). She was born in Maryland to John Henry Knoch (1824-1907). Edward died in Washington, DC.
