Kirby, a retired deputy sheriff with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, killed himself with a self-inflicted gunshot wound shortly after he was contacted regarding an unsolved 1985 murder of a co-worker and friend of his, Sgt George Arthur. Arthur's 1985 murder investigation had recently been reopened and evidence lead investigators to Spokane. When Kirby was asked by investigators to speak to them about the murder, he disappeared and was found about a week later by Spokane journalists in a wooded area near the 1400 block of Rocky Ridge Road. At the time of his suicide, Kirby lived at 1617 S. Koren, Spokane, close to where his body was found.
