VERNITA IRENE STEWART BEATTY

Heflin, Louisiana - Vernita Beatty was born February 21, 1925; in Madden Community east of Fryeburg (Hope), to John Lovic Stewart and Mattie McCoy Stewart. She departed this life on August 29, 2013, at the age of 88, after a three year battle with the effects of a stroke. Visitation will be Saturday, August 31, from 5:00 - 7:00 PM at Heflin Baptist Church. The service will be Sunday, September 1, at 3:00 PM at Heflin Baptist Church with Dr. Mike Hawkins officiating. Burial will follow at Madden Cemetery.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 68 years Lloyd Beatty, her parents, two sisters, Mary Denny Corley and Dorothy Chandler, and a special aunt, Denny Bundrick. Left to cherish her memories are her two children and daughter-in-law, Sandy Beatty, Stewart Beatty and Carolyn Beatty, sister-in-law Lucille Felts, and several nieces and nephews.

She was born and grew up on a small farm in Bienville Parish that was homesteaded by her granddad. The farm and the surrounding woods provided her family with all they needed. It was a very simple but rewarding lifestyle. A lot of her values came from that background.

She married at 16 years of age and still graduated valedictorian of her class at Hope School. That marriage lasted for 68 years until our dad's death in 2009.

Two words that best describe her are loving and faithful. She was first of all faithful to her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Secondly, she was faithful to her family and friends. She was a faithful member of Heflin Baptist Church where she directed the children's department until her health prevented her from doing so. She loved children and loved to teach them about Christ. she was very mission minded and served the Women's Missionary Union for many years as leader. The church and her family were foremost in her life. No church could ever have a more faithful member and no one could have a better mother. How blessed we are!

She was a very dedicated servant to the Village of Heflin. She served as Village Clerk and Water Department Clerk with very little compensation for the almost 30 years that our dad served as Mayor and Water Superintendent. She also assisted him in the family service station business until it closed around 1970, after the sawmill shut down. After that, she helped with the house building business by drawing plans, painting and wallpapering.

We would like to especially thank her caregivers who have provided the best care for almost 2 1/2 years, Yolanda Moore, Rosemary Lofton, Glendora Fizer, and Sheryl Harris; Dr. Scott Phillips and staff, Professional Home Health (Ringgold) and Gambel Hospice for their loving care; Bro. Mike for his faithful visits and prayers; niece Ginger for all the flowers and visits. Thanks to everyone for the visits, kind words and prayers.

Pallbearers will be Joe Beatty, Dr. Billy Bundrick, Dr. Stewart Bundrick, Richard Noles, Ricky Killian, Cody Killian and Caleb Killian. Honorary pallbearers will be the Deacons of Heflin Baptist church.

Memorial contributions may be made to Heflin Baptist Church Building Fund or Mission Fund, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or charity of your choice. Heflin Baptist Church, P.O. Box 124, Heflin, LA 71039.
