*****"When Leander made a visit to his family in Kentucky in December of 1900, he met Ida Renfrow. Leander Hamilton Parrish and Ida Renfrow were married in Kentucky on 8 Mar 1901 (Arcadia Times, Arcadia, Kansas, 21 Mar 1901). By
March 1902 Ida had returned to Kentucky and their son Eldon had been born as a Kansas newspaper reported Leander was visiting his wife and "young heir" in Kentucky in March of 1902 (Arcadia Times, Arcadia, Kansas, 6 Mar 1902). In
March 1903 Leander was involved in a divorce case being tried in Pittsburg, Crawford Co., Kansas; however, the case was continued to the next term of court (Arcadia Times, Arcadia, Kansas, 19 Mar 1903). In September 1903, the
newspaper reported, "The reconciliation of L. H. Parrish and wife last summer was of short duration. Mrs. Parrish left again Monday night for the old Kentucky home. In justice to Mr. Parrish, however, we desire to say that before leaving the country Mrs. Parrish entirely exonerated him from all blame and took it wholly upon herself. She was simply homesick. Mr. Parrish has done more than most men would have done under the circumstances, and he deserves and has the sympathy of the people of this community." (Arcadia Times, Arcadia, Kansas, 24 Sep 1903). The divorce proceedings on file in the District Court of Crawford County, Kansas reveal the following information. Ida left Leander and returned to Kentucky in September of 1903. In May of 1904, Leander's father, Benjamin A. Parrish, died; and on 25 May 1904, Ida sued Leander in Butler County, Kentucky Circuit Court for Leander's share (one-sixth) of Benjamin's estate claiming she left Leander because he was abusive, cruel, and posed a danger to her and their son. Besides Leander, the other heirs mentioned in Ida's petition are Benjamin's widow, Emily Parrish; Dan Parrish; West Parrish; Charley Parrish; Rebecca Parrish Bond; and Earl House. Ida claimed Benjamin's estate included 600 acres of land on Little Reedy Creek and approximately $1,000.00 on deposit with the Jno. M. Carson Banking Co., and she requested that the court direct Emily Parrish and Dan Parrish to "state what money and notes Benjamin Parrish owned at his death." She also asks for a warning order against Leander. The petition states that Leander and Ida were married in March of 1901 in Butler County, Kentucky and identifies Earl House as Benjamin's grandson. Then Leander sued Ida for divorce in the District Court of Crawford County, Kansas on 10 Oct 1904 claiming that Ida had abandoned him. His petition stated that they had been married 8 Mar 1901 in Morgan County, Kentucky, that he had been a good husband, and that without any fault on his part and without provocation, Ida had abandoned him and her home in Kansas. His petition quoted a note Ida had left, "Well, Lee, I will tell my reason why I ant satisfied, I am so far from my people, and this don't seem like it is my home, or I don't feel contented here. I think I can be happier at my home in Ky. Ida B. Parrish." (Perhaps the "ant" was a misspelling or mistyping of "ain't"). Further, the petition stated, "Said plaintiff says that the matters and things contained in the defendant's petition filed against said plaintiff, in the State of Kentucky, are not true, as to his treatment of her while living with him as a wife, that he never was cruel to said plaintiff or their said child, but at all times and under all circumstances treated her kindly and with great consideration, that on account of the distance and expense that he would have to travel and be to, in attending the Court in Kentucky, he has permitted said case to go by default and let her and the child have such portion of his father's estate that would descend to him by the laws of the State of Kentucky." A certified copy of the petition and a copy of the publication notice were mailed to Ida B. Parrish at Roundhill, Butler County, Kentucky on 15 Oct 1904. Ida's attorney filed a motion to quash service of the publication, but there is no date the motion was filed. Nowhere in the file does there appear to be a decree of any kind. There is no evidence in the file that a divorce was ever granted in Crawford County. However, a newspaper later reported granting of the divorce on 28 Jul 1905, "L. H. Parrish was granted a divorce by Judge Fuller at Pittsburg Friday, and Lee is now the happiest man in Lincoln township. His second marriage had proved a pretty expensive affair and it is not likely that he will again embark on the matrimonial sea (Arcadia Reporter, Arcadia, Kansas, Thursday, 3 Aug 1905). Leander H. Parrish was baptized a member of the Arcadia Christian Church on 26 Mar 1909 (Arcadia Christian Church Membership Record.***
