Was a prisoner of war during World War II, held in Stalag Luft IV in northern Poland from May 13, 1944, to Feb. 6, 1945. Feb. 6, 1945 was marched out of the prison camp 630 miles in what would later be known as the "Black March." Many soldiers lost their lives during the harsh trek.
