Bio: Venoy Short's parents were John Short 1845 – 1884 and Eliza Jane Everhart 1846 – 1914. His siblings were: Nancy Short 1879 and Newt Short 1883 – 1960. He had several older half-siblings, but it is not known how well he might have known any of them.

In 1884 when Venoy was only 2 years old, His father passed away, so it is doubtful that her even remembered him.

The 1900 census was the first census after Venoy was born. By then he was 13 years old. Venoy had dropped out of school after he finished the 4 grade, so he was no longer in school. His brother, Newt was 16 and working day jobs. They were living on the same farm that his mother and father had owned when he was born. His mother may have been rented the farm as a source of money for them to live on.

About 1914 Venoy married Nancy Short. From this union 3 children were born. They were: Hessy J Short 1915;Grace P Short 1919 and Minnie M Short 1920.

In the 1920 Is was learned that Venoy was at least 3 years younger than Nancy. They were living in Deer Creek, Carroll, Indiana. Hessy was now 5, little Grace was a toddler and Minnie a tiny baby. Venoy was working as a farm laborer.

About 1921 Nancy died. There is no information about exactly
when she passed away or where she is buried.

In about 1924 Venoy chose Edith Locke to be his wife and to help him raise his 3 little girls. Edith presented him with 5 additional children. They were: Andrew Jackson Short 1925 – 2000; Venoy Short Jr. 1928 – 2006; Betty L Short 1932; Katherine Jane "Sally" Short 1935 – 2003 and Tommy G Short 1938 – 2000.

In the 1930 census, Venoy was working as a farmer, but Edith and Venoy had moved to Deer Creek, Carroll, Indiana and they had bought a radio. Hessie, Grace and Minnie could all read and write, but they were not enrolled in school. Andrew was 41/2 and Venoy Jr. was a toddler.

The 1940 census revealed that Venoy had moved his family to Rural Liberty, Carroll, Indiana. Venoy and Edith had bought a home that was valued at $400.00. Venoy had been working at the W P A (A government work project during the Great Depression) for 26 weeks, 40 hours a week and he had earned $252.00. Andrew, Venoy Jr.. and Betty were attending school,
Catherine was 4 yrs old, and Tommy was a toddler.

It is not known when or why they started calling Venoy, Doc.

From the city directoy of 1943 it was learned that Venoy and family were living at 648 Michigan ave, Logansport, Indiana. In 1956 they were living at 700 State St. He was still living at the same address when he died.

One day in Oct. of 1960 was a sad day for Edith. Her dear husband, Venoy "Docz" Short had passed away. Social Security record him as dying in Flora, Carroll, Indiana, USA, although the City directory publish says He and Edith were living in Logansport, Indiana, USA. It is believed that he my have been a hospital in Flora at the time of his demise. A burial site was selected for him at the La Fontaine IOOF Cemetery, near his brother Newt Short who had been buried earlier that same year.

The grieving Edith surrounded herself with family and friends as she laid her beloved husband to rest. (bio by Audrey DeCamp Hoffman.
