Mr. Carlton "Kelly" Camarata died on Monday, Aug. 17, at Care One in Livingston. He was 98.

A Funeral Mass will be offered in Our Lady of the Lake Church, Verona, on Friday, Aug. 21, at 10:00 AM. Visiting is in the Prout Funeral Home, 370 Bloomfield Ave, Verona, on Thursday, Aug. 20, from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 PM.

Kelly was born in Glen Ridge to the late Joseph and Marie Camarata, emigrants from Catania, Italy. He attended the Verona public school system and was an original founder of the Verona Athletic Club, where he played on three Essex County semi-pro championship baseball teams. Prior to entering the Army, Kelly played trombone in the Frankie Hope Band and the Joe Venuti Band with the Andrews Sisters, as well as many other "big bands".

Kelly was a staff sergeant in the Army, performing with the 370th Army Service Force Band for 42 months. He played trombone in the marching band, played for concerts and directed entertainment programs using military personnel. In addition, during the last 1.5 years of service, he directed radio broadcasts over WBZ for the Women's Army Corps and Nurse Corps. While in the Army, he met and married his wife, Reta, who was also enlisted in the Women's Army Corps (WAC). After they were discharged, they returned to Verona with their first child, where he had been a lifelong resident.

Kelly then joined London Records in New York City, where he was in sales and promotions. He later joined Capitol Records and for 12 years he was the manager of the Music Publishing Division. He searched for song material for artists such as Nat King Cole, Tennessee Ernie Ford, Les Paul and many other Capitol recording artists. He later left Capitol to assume the Eastern representative position for Walt Disney Music Publishing and Record Department, also located in New York City.

In 1969 he left the music business and joined the Essex County Division of Employment & Training. He put many workforce programs into place, training staff members to assist the unemployed get into training programs sponsored by the state and county. He retired after 21 years as the assistant director. Kelly was a well-known amateur golfer and a longtime member of the Knoll Country Club and the East Orange Golf Club. He participated in many golf tournaments in the entertainment industry. Kelly had also been an active member of the Democratic Party, serving as Verona vice chairman and sergeant-at-arms. He was a member of the Verona Senior Citizens Advisory Committee, active in the Verona Senior Citizens Club and an usher at Our Lady of the Lake Church.

He was the husband of the late Reta, who passed away in 1996. He is survived by his four children, Karla, Kathy, James and David; his grandsons, Keith Scharago, Marc Scharago and Nicholas Camarata, his granddaughter, Jamie Lynn Camarata, and his great-grandson, Matthew Scharago. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Endowment Trust Fund of Our Lady of the Lake Church would be appreciated.
