ST. IGNATIUS - Joseph John "Joe Dog" Felsman, 73, former tribal chairman and veteran died in Missoula of cancer.
Born in St. Ignatius Dec.11, 1932 to Oswald & Annie (Ashley) Felsman, he received his education from the Urslines and Chemawah Indian School. He joined the US Navy and as a corpsman with a USMC detachment in Korea. After 16 years he received his honorable discharge.
JoeDog married Sally Ann Ross in the 1950's and lived in Oakland, CA. & Seattle before settling in Philadelphia, where he was a member of Yearsley VFW Post and served as commander. They divorced while in Philadelphia.
He met Lois Chatburn and they lived in Philadelphia before returning to the Reservation in 1974.
He was employed with Philadelphia Steel, the Tribes at Enviromental Health from, Kicking Horse Job Corps, Indian Health Services and served on the Tribal Council and was Tribal chairman from January 84 to January 86. He served Tribal Housing Board, and association with the VFW and Mission Valley Honor Guard and was Chaplain.
He enjoyed jogging, walking, reading and sports. He was an excellent cook. Preceding him in death were his parents, brothers Ronald, Bill, Oswald Jr., Mark, Harold, Grub, Carl & sister Alberta.
Survivors are his wife, children ; sisters; grandchildren; nephew and nieces; god daughter, and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and extended family.
Flags were lowered to half mast to honor his death, and military honors were presented at the Catholic Cemetery.
