Harlan W. "Uncle Harlan" Showers, long time resident of Orange Township, passed away Sunday afternoon August 25, 2013 at Parkside Village in Westerville.
He was born on February 13, 1922 in Cannelville, Ohio to the late Denzel and Mariah (Hodgson) Showers.
He was a 1941 graduate of Orange High School
He was a WWII US Army Veteran serving with the Hellcats Armored Infantry Battalion. He received a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart during his service to our country.
He was a manager for the Lewis Center Delaware Farmers Exchange, Orange Township Volunteer Fireman and Orange Township Clerk. He was a member of the Berlin Church of which he was Treasurer and Elder, American Legion Post No. 171, New England Lodge No. 4 F&AM and Olentangy Dance Club.
Harlan was known as "Uncle Harlan" to most who knew him. He enjoyed spending time with his extended family and always glad to see them. Harlan loved to BBQ and was known for his chicken. He enjoyed boating and swimming at Alum Creek, watching sports, taking care of others and working in his yard.
He is survived by sister: Molly (Dale) Rehard of Lansing, Mich, and although he had no children of his own he was loved by numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by his wife of 61 years: Roberta J. "Bobby" (Clymer) Showers and they were married February 2, 1946; brothers: David, Harvey, James, Homer, Willard; sisters: Mary Showers, Joy Barnett; special nephews: Tom Clymer, Jim Gooding.
Friends may call Thursday from 5-8 p.m. at the DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, SR 3 at 61, Sunbury and one hour prior to the Friday 11 a.m. funeral service at the Berlin Church, 5175 S. Old State Road, Lewis Center with Pastor Rick Negley officiating.
Interment will follow with Military Graveside Services in the Africa Cemetery.
