Funeral services will be conducted Saturday afternoon for Brookfield Mayor, Alfred H. Cerney who died yesterday morning at his home, 518 McGowan St.
The 2 p.m. rites at the First Christian Church will be led by the Rev. William E. Schleiffarth and the Mayor's son, the Rev. Richard Cerney. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.
The body will remain at Hill Funeral Home until noon Saturday when it will be taken to the church.
Mr. Cerney became ill Tuesday night, but was preparing to leave for the Municipal Building Wednesday morning when he was stricken with a heart seizure. He died shortly before 10:30 a.m.
Mayor Pro Tem, Charles Johnson, already sworn into that office, assumed duties as head of the municipal government yesterday afternoon, and will continue to serve until the April city elections.
In tribute to Mr. Cerney's service as Mayor, the city will fly the American flag at half mast over the Municipal Building. Postmaster Emmet Carey indicated the flag at the Post Office will likewise be at half staff.
This morning, Msgr. Francis O'Duignan led special memorial services in honor of Mr. Ceney at 8 a.m., in the Immaculate Conception Church prior to the start of school.
Mr. Cerney was born in St. Paul, Neb., the son of Joseph and Mary Otoupolik Cerney.
On June 1, 1927, he married Kthryn Brott.
Mr. Cerney is survived by his widow of the home; three sons, W. Joe Cerney, Wichita Falls, Tex.; Jerry Brott Cerney, Oklahoma City, Okla.; and the Rev. Richard Remington Cerney, an lstyne, Tex.;p five grandchildren, one great-grandson, one brother, Ernest Cerney, St. Pul, Neb.; several niece and neophews nd other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Jerry Cerney and one sister, Mrs. Olive Buttery.
Mr. Cerney was a member of the First Christian Church of Brookfield.
