Some family histories for Elenor state her birth date as 1812, which could coincide with either of Nathaniel's wives: Mary Cornwell or Margaret Miller. Mary's death is said to have been in 1812 and due to childbirth, and the marriage to Margaret Miller was recorded as 1812.
Could Elenor's mother have been a wife of Nathaniel's, previous to Mary Cornwell, or did Mary come into the marriage with a child? Or was the child theirs, born before they were wed?
The date on the headstone could be incorrect. I could not find a death certificate for Elenor on the WV vital records page. I will leave her mother blank until a record can be found which solves the inconsistencies.

d/o Nathaniel and Margaret Miller Foster" but that doesn't mean she wasn't a step daughter? From the Copenhaver Genealogy by Lloyd Gales Sparks: "In the year 1827 Jacob Dotson came to Nicholas County . . . . Shortly after coming to Nicholas Co he became engaged to Mary Campbell, dgtr of John Campbell. Mary died of fever before the marriage. In Oct 1831 he married Elinor Foster, dgtr of Nathaniel Foster." I show that Nathaniel Foster married a Mary (or Margaret) Cornwell 27 Jan 1806. Nathaniel Foster married Margaret Miller 12 Nov 1812 in Kanawha County, Virginia. According to my notes, Eleanor was born before Nathaniel married Margaret Miller. Was she a Miller?

Notes:Jacob went to Nicholas county in 1827 with Frederick Kesler to do some carpentry work for Mr. Kesler. In October 1831, he married a step-daughter of Nathaniel Foster (Elenor) and bought land on McKees creek. He and Elenor raised 7 children. Jacob was buried at Dotson's Chapel. In another article, copied from The Nicholas Chronicle, written by Gladys Vaughan, it was written that "Nellie" was a daughter of Nathaniel Foster.
