Mary Frances Brandes; 67; of Flat Rock, formerly of Houston, TX; died November 29, 2008 at home. She was born August 25, 1941 at Abram's Knob, Roanoke, Lewis Co., West Virginia to Anna Pearle McCray and Ezra Dana Brown who predeceased her. Ezra had a "special" name for each of his children; Mary was his "Topsy."

Mary was awarded the honor, Lady of the Golden Horseshoe, in West Virginia for her extensive knowledge of West Virginia history. Mary was, also, the 1959 valedictorian of Flat Rock High School under the name Mary Scott. She obtained 3 degrees from University of Michigan: a B.A. in 1963, an M.A. in Classical Languages in 1967, and an M.L.S. (Master of Library Science) in 1981.

In Michigan, Mary taught at Roosevelt High School and Sacred Heart Seminary. She was the librarian at Chatham Elementary School in Houston, Texas for 20 years before retiring in 2002.

Mary is survived by two foster children, Jeremy and Robyn Wilson; seven siblings John (Linda) Brown, Edith (John) Deegan, Donna (Leonard) Fater, David (Tina) Brown, Joanna (Dennis) Gargin, Edward (Nancy) Brown, Walter (Alice) Brown; 17 nieces and nephews; 8 grand-nieces and nephews; and loving friends.

Arrangements for private cremation made by Duzak Funeral and Cremation Services, 16600 W. Warren Detroit MI 48228. Memorial Service 3 p.m., Sunday, December 7, 2008 at First United Methodist Church of Flat Rock, Rev. John K. Bennisan, celebrant. Later interment at Michigan Memorial Park.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to The Guidance Center, Arbor Hospice, or the "Read Across America" literacy campaign through the National Education Association.
