Daniel Anthony Giffin, 92, died on July 31, 2013.

He was born in St. Francis, Kansas, to the late Levi Anthony Giffin and Lily Mae Giffin.

Mr. Giffin graduated in 1943 from Oregon State University with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and served in the US Navy on PT boats, commanding PT 619 (Squadron 42) during WWII.

He was a devout Roman Catholic and attended St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church in Virginia Beach. He was a Fourth Degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus. A former Master Gardener, Dan shared his life-long passion for gardening and the outdoors with his six children.

Formerly of New Bern, NC and Great Falls, VA, Dan is survived by his wife of 68 years, Therese Bernadette Giffin; six children, Daniel A. Giffin, Jr. and wife Sharon; Patricia Ann Giffin; Richard B. Giffin and wife Patrizia and her son Massimo Zorzoli; Kathleen Giffin Bartkus; Kevin G. Giffin; and Mary E. Thompson and husband Steve; and two grandchildren, Matthew Giffin Bartkus and Emily Meaghan Bartkus and their father, John M. Bartkus.

He will be missed by his faithful poodle companion, Shadow.

The family would also like to express their deepest appreciation to the hospice personnel of Medi Home Health & Hospice; their loving care of Daniel, Therese, and the family throughout Daniel's battle with vascular dementia has been invaluable.

The friendship and assistance of Kay and Jim Weaver over the past few years continues to be treasured by Therese and the rest of the family.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, August 6, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church, 5345 Virginia Beach Boulevard, Virginia Beach with Father Lee Yoakam officiating.

Burial will follow in the Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Knights of Columbus Council 9056.
