LOWVILLE-Raymond E. Gordon, 96, of 5701 Brookside Circle, formerly of Hillside Drive, Lowville, died Thursday, August 22, 2013 at the Lewis County General Hospital, after a brief illness.
The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, August 26, 2013, at Lowville United Methodist Church with Rev. Beth O'Neil, Pastor, officiating. Burial will be in West Lowville Rural Cemetery. Calling hours are from 2 – 4 and 6 – 8 p.m. on Sunday, August 25, 2013, at Iseneker Funeral Home, Inc., Lowville, with a Masonic Service to be held at 6:00 p.m. Sunday evening. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Lowville United Methodist Church, 7618 N. State Street, Lowville, NY 13367.
Raymond is survived by his wife of nearly 72 years, Anna; three sons, Dr. Lawrence Gordon and his wife, Dorothy of Manlius, Ralph Gordon and Pam Devendorf of East Syracuse, David Gordon and his wife, Dr. Barbara Gordon of Wilbraham, MA; seven grandchildren, Susan Gordon, Joel Gordon and his wife, Lauren, Daniel Gordon and his wife, Jill Quint, Denise Karchmer and her husband, Adam, Laura Buckley and her husband Sean, Solon Gordon and his wife, Jenn Chang, and Tristan Gordon; three great grand-daughters, Claire and Brooke Karchmer and Natalie Gordon; a sister, Dorothy Waugh of Harrisville, several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by three brothers, Floyd, Charles and Kenneth Gordon, and a sister, Miss Winifred Gordon.
Ray was born on January 2, 1917 in Lowville, NY, a son of the late Charles and Sadie Hall Gordon and graduated from Lowville Academy in 1934. While in school, he played in the band under director Luther B. Askin. Ray and Anna McCue were united in marriage on October 1, 1941 at Trinity Episcopal Church with Rev. Walter Bennett officiating. They lived on the Gordon family farm in West Lowville, which they later co-owned with his brother, Charles. In 1980, they moved to Hillside Drive in Lowville. Ray was a member of Lowville United Methodist Church, where he served as Treasurer and sang in the choir. In addition, he made wooden items for the church and for sale at the church bazaars. He was a past Treasurer and President of West Lowville Rural Cemetery. He was a member of the former Lowville Grange, now Denmark Grange, County, State, and National Granges, where he held many offices and was Deputy for Lewis County Grange from 1960-1964. Also, he was a member of Lowville Masonic Lodge #134. He also served on various Ag committees. Ray and Anna were charter members of North Country Swingers square dance club and taught cued round dance in Lowville and Adams from 1970-2000. Ray also cued for many dances in the North Country. He played the clarinet and saxophone in the Lowville and Boonville Village Bands from 1936-1969, and dance bands in the thirties and forties with Lewis Shattuck, Gorham Allen and John Ross orchestras. Ray enjoyed music, gardening, dancing and woodworking.
