Mary was the daughter of James John and Ann Taylor Finlayson. She was born in Oregon or Indiana while traveling with her parents, Scottish immigrants, on the Oregon Trail. The family eventually settled in Linn County, Oregon. In 1874 Mary graduated from Albany Collegiate Institute with a science degree. She joined the faculty of Albany Collegiate. She did not marry nor have children. Mary died at age 24.
