Taylor Land Grizzard of Richmond, died Saturday, August 20, 2005, in Newport News, at the age of 81. Born on a peanut farm in Greensville County, he made many contributions to Virginia agriculture. As a youth, he represented Virginia in the National 4-H Camp and served as "big chief" of the Virginia 4-H All Stars. While a marketing specialist for the Virginia Department of Agriculture, he was a marketing consultant to the government of Puerto Rico. He was part of a Virginia delegation, appointed by the governor, that traveled to Europe to promote the export of Virginia's agricultural commodities. Grizzard was instrumental in organizing the Virginia Peanut Growers Cooperative Marketing Association, the Virginia Egg Council, and served as president of the Virginia Turkey Association, president of the Virginia Poultry Association, and president of the National Turkey Federation. Mr. Grizzard was chairman of the Virginia Agricultural Council. He retired as public relations director for Wampler-Longacre Company. He was designated as Virginia Tech's College of Agriculture outstanding graduate of the class of 1946. Mr. Grizzard was a WWII Army veteran, who served in the Panama Canal zone, where he met and married Thelma Anderson of Richmond, who preceded him in death. Mr. Grizzard was a former district governor of Ruritan and a past president of the Young Democratic Clubs of Virginia. Taylor taught a men's Bible class at the Woodland Heights Baptist Church for over 40 years. His trademarks were an infectious smile, a glad handshake, a friendly word, and a helping hand for those in need.
