Ruth was a Registered Nurse and an artist. She completed over 100 paintings, a number of which were sold for substantial amounts. She never took lessons. She enjoyed painting scenes of the West - Yellowstone Park, Mount Baldy - and of places she had seen in Europe - Ely Cathedral, Buckingham Palace, but her favorite subject was still life. One painting, in particular, was of Lewis and Clark crossing the river on their trip through the West. This painting now hangs in the home of her niece.

Ruth and Gus married in Livingston, Montana, on May 12, 1932. They never had children of their own, but they adopted a little girl, Susie, and later her two children.
