JOHN CALKINS was born in Sharon, Connecticut March 11, 1803 to Sylvanus Calkins and Lucretia Parker. His parents removed to Steuben County, New York when he was 18 years of age. In 1826 John married Ruth Crawford born in the state of New York in 1809. They removed to Illinois about 1836, and to Wisconsin about 1845 and settled on a farm near the town of Arena. John studied to be a lawyer and was admitted to the bar. He helped settle law troubles for people in his community. He was often gone from home for long periods and his wife and children worked the farm. John died at home March 1, 1874. He and Ruth are buried in Mazomaine, Dane County, Wisconsin. John and Ruth had eleven children: Emily, John Franklin, Maria A., Homer, Orrah, Isabel, Jerome, Stephen Crawford, Anson Miller, Reuben, & Lewis Cass Calkins.
