Charles "Choppie" Binder, 84, Hays, died Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2005, at the Mitchell County Hospital, Beloit. He was born May 18, 1921, in Hays to Roy Gibson and Adaline "Ida" (Rupp) Binder.

He married Betty Mae Slaughter on Sept. 21, 1943, in Salinas, Calif. She died Jan. 4, 1994.

He was a U. S. Air Force veteran during World War II with the 312th Bomb Group. He served as parks caretaker in 1946 and became department foreman. He then became public works superintendent for the Service Division for the city of Hays retiring in 1983.

Survivors include his a son, Charles Roy Binder and wife, Joan, Missoula, Mont.; a daughter, JoAnn Schroller and husband, Tom, Hays; two sisters, Marie Molleker and Evelyn Aumberson, Ruth Cooper, all of Hays; three grandchildren, Heather Smith, Chris Binder and Steven Schroller; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Gary Lee Binder in Vietnam on Oct. 13, 1967.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 20th and Pine; burial in Mount Allen Cemetery, Hays, with military honors by the Hays Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the Humane Society of the High Plains, 2050 East Highway 40, Hays.
