Wilmot attended the State University of Iowa, which is now Iowa State University, where he met his future wife Naomi Stockdale. He majored in the law and became a lawyer. Most of his married life was spent with relatives living with he and Naomi. His mother-in-law Elizabeth Stockdale moved in with them and stayed until her death. His sister-in-law Verne Stockdale lived with them until she married Wilbur Earl Wolfe and moved to Canada.
Wilmot and Naomi had two daughters Elizabeth and Mary 10 years apart. When Naomi died suddenly from an aneurism when Elizabeth was 21 and Mary 11, Verne whose husband had passed away, moved in with Wilmot to help in the raising of his youngest daughter Mary. Elizabeth married Wilbur Wilhelm and moved to MN to start a new life. Verne brought her son Fred Wolfe to live in the household as well. When Mary grew to adulthood she attended Mac Murry College in Jacksonville, Ill where she stayed one year before marrying John W. Weaver.
Wilmot wrote his last letter to his daughter Mary mentioning he had been in the hospital with some problems with his feet, but was out and going to go back to work. He died about a week later.
