From "Early Families of Standish, Maine," by Albert J.J. Sears (Heritage Books, 2019), p.329-30, John was probably born in Boston to Abraham and Amiable (Blake) York and settled in Pearsonstown (now Standish), Maine with his brother Abraham as early as 1754. He married Sarah Strout when she was apparently only 11 years old, and the author gives evidence for this, and they had ten children. He reportedly died by drowning in "the basin" of Sebago Pond in 1771. No mention of his burial place.

He should not be confused, as if often the case in online trees, with the John York who was born in Durham, NH in 1722, or the John York of Epping, NH who married Sarah Folsom.
