George Bryan Collins, Sr., 83, of Wilkesboro, passed away August 21, 2013.

George was born June 3, 1930 in Alleghany County to Charlie Gwyn and Vesta Shepherd Collins. After graduating from the public schools in Sparta, N.C., George enrolled at North Carolina State University, graduating in 1952. While at N.C. State, he worked on the college dairy farm for two years and then became the head of dairy research at the Mountain Experiment Station in Waynesville, N.C.

George enlisted in the United States Army in 1953 where he served two years in Munich, Germany and was Honorably Discharged as a First Lieutenant. He joined The Northwestern Bank in 1955 as an Agricultural Representative. Between 1959 and 1971, he was promoted to Assistant Vice President, Vice President, and Senior Vice President. In 1975, he was elected President of the Northwestern Bank where he served until his retirement in 1986.

During George's banking career he served his profession as a member of the North Carolina State Banking Commission, Chairman of the Agricultural Committee of the North Carolina Bankers Association, President of the Association of Agricultural Bankers in the Fifth Federal Reserve District, director of First Atlantic Corporation, director of Northwestern Factors, director of the North Carolina Agribusiness Council, and director of Atlantic States Bankcard Association.

George was also very devoted to serving his community. He served two terms as President of the Wilkes Chamber of Commerce, eight years on the Board of Trustees of Appalachian State University including one term as Chairman, and was a founding Board member of the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching. He was also on the Advisory Council of the School of Agriculture and Life Sciences at North Carolina State University, President of the North Carolina Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts and was President of the Wilkes Area Development Association. He was a Director and member of the Executive Committee of the Wilkes Health Foundation, a Director of the Wilkes YMCA, and a Director of the Yadkin Valley Dairy Co-op. George was a member of the Wayland Sunday School Class at the First Baptist Church of North Wilkesboro.

George's greatest joy was his family. He married Ida Maude Black of Sparta in 1958 and they enjoyed more than 54 wonderful years together. They have one daughter, Alison Collins Huskey of Wilkesboro who has two children, Alaina Brooke Grit and Troy Collins Huskey. George was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Tommy Huskey. George and Ida Maude also have one son, the Honorable George Bryan Collins, Jr. of Raleigh who is married to Allegra Milholland Collins. Bryan has four children, Kristy Dancy Sichak, Katie Dancy Akins, Nolan Luca Cazzari, and Maegan Gabrielle Collins.

George is also survived by two sisters, Doris Collins Stoker and Lucy Collins Roe, both of Sparta, and a brother, Roger Eugene Collins of Raleigh.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 24, 2013 at The First Baptist Church of North Wilkesboro, Dr. N. Nelson Granade, Jr. officiating. A graveside service will be held at 3:00 p.m. at Mount Zion United Methodist Church Cemetery in Piney Creek, North Carolina. A visitation will be held Friday evening from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Reins Sturdivant Funeral Home of North Wilkesboro.
