Mary Matilda Digges was born in Missouri to William Dudley Digges and Lily Mae Jackson.
She married Milton Edward Newell on May 28, 1919 in Wichita, Kansas. She was working as a waitress in a café, and Milt worked for the Railroad.
They had 3 children, Marion Elizabeth, Milton Joseph, and an infant son who died due to the Kansas dustbowl effect. They moved their family to Ogden, Utah, where Mary worked at the Defense Depot, and Milt retired from the railroad.
