[This is a memorial only as the actual gravesite of Harmon Chavis is unknown. Most likely he rests at an unmarked gravesite in Holmes County; however, this cemetery was chosen as a place for his burial memorial because his widow, the mother of his daughter, is buried here. (there is no marker at this cemetery for Harmon)].

Harmon Chavis was a native of Louisiana and a Confederate soldier. His birth & death dates are estimated. Somehow after the war he wound up in Holmes County Mississippi and married Margaret Ann Sproles, probably about 1867. Harmon died at age 24, leaving Margaret with a 13-month old daughter Theodorene. (Foregoing information courtesy of Dr. Mary Miller).

Notes: Some think census data indicates a birth date of about 1841 for Harmon Chavis, perhaps born near Washington, Parish, Louisiana. Margaret and her daughter, Theodorene, are listed in the 1870 census living next door to her parents Zacharia and Elizabeth Sproles. Not long after Harmon's death his widow Margaret married Henry Ward Alexander.
