"FINDS DIAMOND RING; RETURNS IT TO OWNER
Jacob T. Kennedy, Nashville Man, Finds Precious Stone In Dirt He Was Shoveling In Indianapolis
It wasn't my ring, I had no right to it. Why shouldn't I have returned it? Thus spoke Jacob T. Kennedy, former resident of Brown county, after he had returned to it's owner a diamond ring valued at from $300 to $400 which he had found in Indianapolis, where he and his family now reside. In Friday's Indianapolis News there appeared an article about the finding of the ring, together with a picture of Mr. Kennedy. We copy the news story.
"An act of honesty that fairly shines through needy circumstances has been brought to light in the home for a WPA worker. Jacob T. Kennedy, 1442 East Eleventh street, is assigned to the White river project in the vacinity of Oliver avenue. Not long ago he was shoveling dirt and seeing something glitter against the brown earth picked it up.
"The glitter was a man's gold ring set with a diamond. Around the stone was a design of a meat cleaver and saw and other tools used by a handler of meats. Inside the ring was the inscription, "C.J. Gardner from his wife, December 25, 1889." Kennedy took it home and showed it to his friends and neighbors. Some advised him to sell it and one offered him $100 cash on the spot. 'When he offered me that much, I knew it must be worth more,' Kennedy explained later. 'I took it to a jeweler and he said it probably was worth $300 or $400. But it wasn't my ring. I had no right to it.'
"As he pondered over the inscribed name, Kennedy recalled that many years ago he used to buy meat from Charles J. Gardner, who was engaged in the meat packing business and that the Gardner plant was long White river. Possibly the dirt which he was shoveling had been hauled from the site of that plant or the ring had washed down to the project area by the water, the worker reasoned.
"Determined to return the ring to its rightful owner or his family, Kennedy made inquiries until he was in communication with Will C. Gardner, a son of C.J. Gardner. A brief description of the ring satisfied the son that it formerly was a treasured possession of his father, who died more than four years ago. With gratitude he accepted it from Kennedy. 'He gave me a reward but I didn't want it or expect it. No sir, that ring wasn't mine to keep,' Kennedy said. 'Why shouldn't I have returned it?'
"Kennedy and his wife are natives of Brown county."
