John Patton Grant, the son of Wilkey Ichabod Grant and Mary Ann Totherow Grant was born in Tennesee Valley Township of Macon County, NC; this was the part of Macon County which became Nantahala Township of Swain County when Swain was formed in 1871.


John first married Elizabeth Ann "Betsy Lowe, the daughter of Nathan and Elizabeth Mason Low from Macon County, NC; her father was a shoemaker by profession.

Betsy died in Swain Co., NC before 1890 (she is on the 1880 Census but not on the 1890 /Swain Co.,NC). She was buried in Grant Cemetery on Silvermine, not far from where the family lived, it is at the end of what is known as Taylor Road; they lived on this road. Her grave is unmarked.


After Betsy's death, he married on January 30, 1890 in Towns County, GA, to a widow, Georgia Ann "George Ann" Wofford Quilliams..


They made their home on Silvermine in the Nantahala Twp. of Swain County, NC (postal address was Wesser, NC). This was in the former Tennessee Valley Township of Macon County which became Swain County in 1872. John Patton Grant was a Farmer.
