Mrs. Bert Holt, aged 55 years, a resident of Two Rivers, Wisconsin, was killed instantly when struck by an automobile driven by John Johnson, also of Two Rivers, Saturday evening. The accident happened on the east side at Two Rivers at East and Eighteenth Streets.
Mrs. Holt was proceeding on foot to her home on Lincoln Ave. As she stepped onto the street she was struck by the left fender of the northbound car. Her head was caught between a head light and the radiator and she was dragged for a considerable distance.
Mrs. Holt was hurried to a physician's office but was dead upon arrival there. The sheriff and district attorney were soon on the scene.
Johnson was placed under arrest and District Attorney Meyer ordered an inquest. The following jury was called, viewed the body and adjourned to Monday: Louis Kuenzel, George Paska, John J. Marek, John J. Marek, Joseph Arle, William Rehrauer and John Reis.
The remains of Mrs. Holt were taken to Marinette County Tuesday for burial there at her former home.
The principal witness at the inquest was Mrs. Joseph Klein who sitting on her front porch saw the accident. Her testimony tended to free Johnson of blame. She said he was not driving fast and that Mrs. Holt walked into the path of the car and became confused. Other witnesses were Edward Strom and wife, Fay Thorn, Henry LaFond and Clifford Lesperance.
The jury returned a verdict that it was an unavoidable accident, although a coroner's verdict contrary to a common notion has no bearing whatever upon the criminal responsibility of anyone. Johnson was released from the county jail upon the coming in of this verdict and it is likely will not be charged with any offense in connection with the death.
