Carol Jean MacArthur was born January 6, 1919 in Niagara, Marinette County, Wisconsin. By 1925 the family had moved to Appleton, Outagami, Wisconsin. When she was seven years old her mother died. Because Ella Fletcher Ings had died when Neta was young Laura Edwards Ings was the maternal grandmother that Jean knew and loved.
In 1928 her father married Jean Brigham MacArthur, who became her step-mother and the beloved grandmother of her children. After 1930 the family moved to Neenah, Wisconsin. Jean graduated from Neenah High School in 1937. She attended the University of Wisconsin for a year. The family moved to Washington, D.C.in 1939. In the 1940 census they are living outside of Parkersburg, West Virginia. In 1940 the family moved to Huntington, West Virginia where she attended Marshall College. There she met Kenneth Bean, who was teaching psychology there that year. The next year she transferred to the Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She and Ken were married January 19, 1942 in Baton Rouge. Their first two children were born there. In 1948 they moved to Waco, Texas where their third child was born. She taught in the elementary schools in Waco, Knoxville, Iowa and Temple, Texas. In Temple she served for many years as principal of Emerson Elementary School. She died on April 12, 2015 in Temple, Texas.
