Darlene "Dolly" Salisbury, 67, died Monday, June 17, 2002, at her home in Edmond, Okla.
She was born to Charles A. Salisbury and Beulah "Belo" Brown Salisbury in Pender, on Sept. 6, 1934. She graduated from York High School in 1952. She attended Texas State College for Women in Denton, Texas, and the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. She became a licensed cosmetologist in 1959.
Dolly was an avid aviation enthusiast. She began her flight training under the instruction of Don "Poppa" Bair at York and received her private pilot's certificate in 1960. Over the next few years she earned a commercial pilot's certificate, flight instructor's certificate, instrument rating, instrument instructor's rating, multi-engine rating, airline transport rating and lighter-than-air balloon rating. Dolly also received an aerobatic achievement award.
She was a member of the 99ers, International Flying Farmers and Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. Dolly was chief flight instructor and co-owner of American Aero at Grand Island. She was a charter pilot for Crystal Shamrock Airlines in Minneapolis, Minn., and a co-pilot for Air Nebraska, a commuter airline.
Dolly flew a weather modification project in 1980 before her appointment as general aviation inspector for the Federal Aviation Administration in 1981 in Minneapolis. She continued her career with the FAA in Oklahoma City, where she was employed at the time of her death.
Dolly was preceded in death by her parents and infant son, Scottie. She will be deeply missed by a host of friends and relatives and her two faithful companions, Chumie-Chum and Cowboy.
