On May 24, 1947, he and Helen Garner were married in Rockdale by the Rev. F.T. Sager. He was a farmer and rancher in Milam County for over 70 years. Henry dearly loved his family and friends. He was a highly respected farmer and rancher who served his community, church and state in various positions throughout his life. His farming practices always reflected his concern for preserving our natural resources. He was a dedicated and honored member of the local Soil and Water Conservation District.
Mr. Abel passed away Wednesday morning, August 14, 2013 in Scott & White Hospital in Temple.
He was preceded in death by his father, Henry Frank Abel on August 1, 1928 and his mother, Annie H. Abel on December 4, 2000.
Surviving family; His wife of 66 years, Helen Garner Abel of Sharp. Son, Henry Abel, Jr., DVM and wife Lisa of Friendswood. Daughter, Susan Voskamp and husband Tommy of Midland. His sister, Viola Niemtschk of Thorndale. 8 grandchildren, Henry Abel, III and wife Tonya, Heath Abel and wife Erika, Zach Salyer and wife Jennifer, Caleb Salyer and wife Lindsey, Molli Abel, Hunter Abel, Christy Canada and husband Daniel, Travis Voskamp and wife Megan. 12 great-grandchildren, Shelby and William Abel, Elli and Alex Abel, Silas and Scarlett Salyer, Garner and Grey Canada, Lane, Leila, True and Beacon Voskamp.
Funeral services for are scheduled at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Rockdale. Rev. John Kueker of Buckholts officiating. Visitation is at the funeral home.
Pallbearers are, Henry Abel, III, Heath Abel, Zach Salyer, Caleb Salyer, Hunter Abel, Daniel Canada, Travis Voskamp, Jimmy Guthrie.
